I beg to submit herewith particulars concerning the escape of a large number of men from the Ma Tau Chung Internment Camp by means of a manhole leading to an underground nullah running through the centre of the Camp sometime between 19.00 and 20.00 hours on the 13.1.39.
The facts are that at 01.15 hrs. on the 14.1.39
I,P.C.67 Wali Mohd was on duty in Waterloo Road between Boundary Street and Lincoln Road when he saw eight (8) Chinese males coming towards him.
He called upon them to stop, but instead they began running, but when he told them that he would shoot at them, two of them stopped and threw up their hands, four of them turned back whilst the other two continued on up Waterloo Road and eventually escaped. He shouted for help.
I.P.C.668 Kha Wat Din on a nearby Beat, ran to his assistance and the two men who had stopped were taken into custody. In the meantime, I.P.C.665 Fazil Elaha on an adjoining Beat was walking up Boundary Street when he saw the four (4) Chinese males run out from Waterloo Road into Boundary Street.
He called upon them to stop, stating that he would
shoot if they disobeyed.
They all stopped. He caught hold of two of them and ordered the other two to walk in front.

He then shouted/for assistance and I.P.C.67 and 668
who were not far off went to his assistance.
They asked the men who they were and where they had come from and they admitted that they had escaped from the Ma Tau Chung Internment Camp. They also recognised the clothing the men wore as being the same kind worn by the internees of the Internment Camp.
They escorted them back to the Camp and handed them over
to the Main Gate guard.
